Denver is the new "Ramshackle All-star Country Band" featuring members of Blitzen Trapper and Alela Diane’s Wild Divine. They are currently based out of Portland OR and sound every bit as unflappable, moss covered, and drenched in booze as the city itself. The record comes out August 14th with the record release show August 18th at the Doug Fir Lounge in Portland OR.

Harry Oakwood is infectious. With something new to like about the music with each passing listen, I am sure that this is a band with a bright future and a solid foundation from which they will build. The influence of The Band is undeniable, but what's more, Harry Oakwood communicates a grand sense of camaraderie while they sing and play. They are a ruckus rousing rock and roll orchestra of a good time, and they want you to sing-along.

Friend of the Dig and apostle of country music Jonny Corndawg recently released a new video alongside Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes for his new song Fever Dreams off his forthcoming album Dad Country. The video, which comes to us via Cock and Bull TV (Facebook & Twitter), showcases Jonny's uncanny wordplay and brooding story telling. TWD is anxiously awaiting the release of Dad Country, but until then, this will have to hold us over.

In the interview we discuss their history of collaboration, their views on being a working class artist in Baltimore, the Wire, the myriad of collaborations on their album, Flock of Dimes, as well as their plans for the future.

Bramzwig: Big Spender

Bramzwig is a 21 year old New York rapper with one mixtape entitled The Roaring Twenty already under his belt. This morning I stumbled upon his new single Big Spender where he remixes the sumptuous Peggy Lee classic of the same name into his own creation.

I enjoy Bramzwig's Big Spender because of his tight rhythm scheme and alliteration. I love the fast tempo of his lyrics and really enjoy the inventiveness of a Peggy Lee sample. This morning Bramzwig sent me scrambling through my LPs looking for the original 1966 Peggy Lee release, which is just fine with me any morning.

He is doling out his second mixtape called Newer York at the end of this month so keep your antenna up. Find more Bramzwig on Twitter, and YouTube as well.

Chris Pumphrey Sextet Concert Review

The Wind Up Space is one of Baltimore's sometimes hidden treasures. It's a unique performance/gallery space and bar that hosts musicians who mostly don't fit between the Meyerhoff and the Ottobar. It's nestled in neatly on the corner of North Avenue and Charles Street one block from where Omar shot Brother Mouzone.

This last Friday night The Wind Up Space was invaded by the likes of Level Zero, Mobley, and the unparalleled Chris Pumphrey Sextet. I loved this. The crowd was a mix of reverent silence and overheated boozers who where looking to blow off steam with some out jazz. Both crowds were satiated.

Woody Allen and George Gershwin: Manhattan

It's been a while since the last installment of Scenes and Songs so I thought I'd break that streak and bring you New York Philharmonic's performance of George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue alongside the opening scene of Woody Allen's equally iconic film Manhattan. Brimming with the "…coiled sexual power of a jungle cat" I could not think of a more exquisite matchup of sound and city. NYC exudes the music of George Gershwin and if you've never seen this film I hope to change that for you with this clip. Enjoy.
