The Highwaymen: Great Song, Terrible Video

Oh man, I have had this song stuck in my head all day. I actually really like this song. With Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson you can’t go wrong. I sang this song all the way through the morning. When lunch finally rolled around I sprinted to my computer, got on YouTube and found the video. With coffee in hand I hit play.
I honestly spit coffee on my desk. I had completely forgotten how bad this video was. Man, what was the art director thinking when they shot this? Well if you are unfamiliar watch it real quick, I’ll wait.

Am I right? Those lighting strikes, Willie Nelson celebrating his robbery by throwing his gold coins up in the air? Waylon Jennings getting hit with lightning on the dam? Ouch. And then, when you think it’s all over, you get a grand finale of CGI lighting effects. That is truly the pièce de résistance. It turns out that all the musical talent in the world cannot make your video production team better.
If I didn’t know better I’d say that this video was trying to be so bad that it is actually good. I know I certainly laugh every time I watch it. I tell my friends to watch it. In that regard it achieves it’s goal. However, I were to wager at this point in their careers the musician’s recording labels were shelling out good money for video production. I’d like to meet the guy that got paid WAY too much money to create those lightning effects.
Thankfully the song is really, really good. Happy Friday.
