Bachelorette, the musical project of New Zealander Annabel Alpers, will perform tomorrow night (3/4/12) at the Cameo Gallery in Williamsburg. The venue is at 93 N. 6th Street, right by the Bedford L stop (not that the L will be running, unfortunately). Doors are at 8:00 PM, the cost is $10, and the show is 21+. The other acts are Baby Alpaca and Bermuda Bonnie.
Bachelorette – Blanket
Bachelorette is gearing up for an opening slot on the Magnetic Fields tour this March and will likely be playing a lot of songs from her most recent release, the self-titled Bachelorette album on Drag City. I have to admit with that name there was no way I wasn't going to compare this music to the ABC reality show when I first heard it. Er… I mean, to Bjork. That was a joke, you'll laugh later. Anyways, since "Bachelorette" happens to be one of my favorite Bjork songs and videos, it was inevitable she'd be on my mind. It turns out Bjork isn't that far off the mark as a point of comparison, since Bachelorette is an inventive female artist who fuses electronics with folk sounds.
But don't think Bachelorette is some Bjork rip-off or one-dimensional. There is plenty going on throughout the album. At times, I was reminded of the elegant dreamy sheen of Beach House or the pop psychedelia of fellow New Zealand artist Princess Chelsea, but the main point is that I always knew I was listening to the work of a musician with her own vision and sensibility. The song that jumped out strongest was "Blanket," which you can listen to above. There are similar rousing cuts on the album, and others are more meditative. Bachelerotte has a consistent, unified vibe, yet it never feels dull. I feel that Bachelorette is quite artistic and goes to some interesting places on record, so I would expect her to bring a similar approach to her live show. If you are in the area, definitely check it out. Tickets are available here. Her album is available here.
