Broken Bells – Meyrin Fields

Broken Bells has been one of my favorite acts of the year and they will most certainly make a list on my upcoming year end best-of list. A couple of days ago they released a digital single for "The Ghost Inside" and it included the B-side "Meyrin FIelds".

On first listen, I understood why the track didn't make the cut on Broken Bells. It's a bit monotonous and plodding. Once I threw on my headphones I changed my tune. The production on "Meyrin Fields" is every bit as bouncy and captivating as the rest of the album. It's a little darker and more ominous than it's album counterparts, but that's to it's benefit. The faux-orchestration gives the track an epic feel that balances well with the cartoony, high pitched backing vocals echoing James Mercer's apocalyptic lyrics.
