When I was in high school I had a moment of clarity (panic attack) while I was listening to Vince Guaraldi on cassette tape and lying of the ground of my bedroom. I remember this brief moment vividly because it was the first time the sheer weight of music history impressed itself upon me. There is an insurmountable amount of music out there, and I will take my listening to-do list to the grave with me. This is the simple fact of my life.
With that in mind, let me present a couple performances which recently blew my mind on the basis of existence alone.
Dee Dee King: Mashed Potato Time
Dee Dee King is the ill advised hip hop alter ego of Ramones bassit, Dee Dee Ramone. In 1989 he released a solo hip hop album that's so bad it's almost good (heavy emphasis on the almost part). To be honest I didn't know this album existed until a student of mine brought it to my attention. As far as I can tell, the only reason to own this record is so that you can play it ironically in the background of college parties.
The Cleverlys are a bluegrass outfit that specializes in sardonic covers. Originally I really wasn't sure I got the joke or if it even was a joke. Lord I hope it's a joke. Either way, I can't look away.
There you have it readers, proof that the world is a strange place filled with strange people. Have a nice weekend and a happy record day. You Dig?
