The Cup Song, Mainers Mountaineers, and The Lifecycle of a Pop Song

The expression what goes around must come around fits nicely here. Apparently this song is rapidly approaching 100 years old. This is the oldest version I could find that is arranged in a similar fashion*. It is by the group Mainers Mountaineers, and it’s pretty awesome.

Mississippi Sawyer on The Dig Sessions

Welcome to the first ever installment of The Dig Sessions. The Dig Sessions is just an excuse to get out into the world, make friends, and document music. We are trying to capture all music, of all genres and musicianship levels. In our modern world of iPods and mp3s it is easy to forget that not so many years ago if you wanted to hear music you had to either play it yourself, or watch someone else play. That is the soul of The Dig Sessions, watching people play music. Single takes, no gimmicks. Just a microphone and a camera capturing REAL music with all its beautiful imperfections.

David Wax Museum: Everything is Saved

It was almost two years ago to the day that my parents told me about a band that I HAD to see, David Wax Museum. For various reasons I missed their shows when they were near. I finally saw them at Linneman’s Riverwest Inn and was blow away. I have only seen them once since and was equally impressed. That is the show I picked up Everything is Saved. Guy On A Buffalo

I can’t believe I have gone so long without ever watching these videos. With no further hesitation I bring you, in four parts, Guy On a Buffalo.

Thanks to Ivan for that – also thanks for the great series of recent posts to get us going again. Things will probably look different in the year ahead, but Dave, Ivan, and I are excited about keeping Those Who Dig going and growing. First, though, a quick look back on the year that was is in order. I have a series of 2013 recap posts planned for the next week or so and I’m starting today with The Year In Dig. Read more…

Dave Rawlings Machine – Going to California

I still honestly believe that Gillian Welch And David Rawlings live at the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee is the best musical performance I have ever seen. The two were electric. Between their stage presence and the quality of the musicianship the audience was so captivated you could hear a pin drop. Luckily my addiction got another fix when this video of Dave Rawlings Machine covering the Led Zeppelin classic Going to California landed on my desk.

Lake Street Dive: Bad Self-Portraits

Lake Street Dive, the blossoming quartet from Brooklyn, is about to release a new album, Bad Self Portraits. If you are unfamiliar with the group you owe it to yourself to check them out. Their sound is both timeless and modern. Spot on, funky, jazzy instrumentals and crystal clear, powerful vocals shoot them to the top of my current touring bands to see.
